Final Expense

Grief and a five-figure bill shouldn't arrive in the same week. Final expense coverage is built to handle the costs that land immediately, so your family can focus on each other.

What It Is

Understanding Final Expense Insurance

Final expense insurance is a small whole life policy, typically somewhere between $5,000 and $50,000, designed to cover the costs that come due right after a death rather than to replace decades of income.

Because the face amounts are modest, the underwriting is usually far simpler than a large life policy. Many plans are simplified issue (a short health questionnaire, no medical exam) and some are guaranteed issue, which accept applicants within an age band regardless of health, generally with a two- or three-year graded benefit period at the start.

It is permanent coverage, so as long as premiums are paid the policy doesn't expire at a certain age, which is exactly the point for someone buying it in their sixties or seventies.

Questions

Frequently Asked

How much does a funeral actually cost?
Costs vary widely by region and by the type of service chosen, and they've risen steadily. Rather than quote a national figure that may not reflect your area, we'd suggest checking prices with two or three local funeral homes (they're required to provide itemised price lists) and sizing coverage from real local numbers.
Can I be turned down for final expense insurance?
Simplified issue plans do ask health questions and can decline. Guaranteed issue plans generally accept applicants within the age range without health questions, but typically use a graded benefit for the first two to three years, meaning a death from natural causes in that window returns premiums plus interest rather than the full benefit.
Does the money have to be spent on a funeral?
No. The benefit is paid to your beneficiary as cash. They can use it for the funeral, medical bills, travel for family, or anything else. Naming someone reliable and telling them the policy exists matters as much as buying it.
How is this different from pre-paying a funeral home?
A pre-need arrangement is a contract with a specific funeral home for specific goods and services. Final expense insurance is a policy that pays cash to a person you choose, which stays flexible if you move or change your mind about arrangements.
Will my premium go up as I get older?
With the whole life policies typically used for final expense, the premium is designed to remain level for the life of the policy. Age at application is what determines the rate, which is why applying earlier generally costs less.
Can I have this alongside other life insurance?
Yes. Many people hold a term policy for income replacement during working years and a small permanent policy for final expenses that stays in force afterwards.
